You will provide oversight and management of NCDC's large volume data holdings, both digital and hardcopy, and have substantial involvement in integrated data access activities. As the Archives Manager, within the Data Operations Division, you will manage large development projects for operational implementation involving ingest and mass storage systems and relational database systems, work with the research community to develop plans and budget initiatives to archive data from research programs, support the activities of the World Data Center for Meteorology, Asheville, and serve as the NOAA/NCDC Records Liaison Officer. Computer Programmer and Technical Liaison Internship (Silver Spring, MD)
Position Description
Paid, full-time, 12-month duration.

The National Ocean Service's Coast Survey Development Lab (CSDL) and Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) along with the National Weather Service/NCEP Central Operation's Production Management Branch are working together to transition NOS' Coastal Ocean Modeling Framework (COMF) and NOS' numerical oceanographic forecast systems for estuaries and the Great Lakes to NCEP’s Central Computing System (CCS).

Will assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of COMF software to run in the NCEP CCS environment and utilize real-time data and NCEP model forecast guidance from the CCS' "data tanks" to support the development and operation of NOS' numerical oceanographic forecast systems. Assist NOS ocean modelers to adapt their numerical ocean forecast models for estuaries and Great Lakes to run in the CCS environment using the CCS-based COMF. Assist in maintaining the existing COMF's component called the Operational Data Acquisition and Archiving System (ODAAS) on CSDL’s Linux server until the transition of NOS’ operational numerical oceanographic forecast systems to CCS is completed.

Required Skills
Must have experience in writing Unix/Linux shell scripts, in FORTRAN programming and documentation and other computer programming languages (e.g., Perl, NCL, C). Basic knowledge of NWS/NCEP numerical model production suite and experience with reading and decoding data formats such as GRIB2, netCDF, BUFR, and SHEF is desired. Should enjoy computer programming and scripting and be detailed oriented. Must be comfortable working with scientists from a variety of fields remotely and in person, both at the individual level and in a team environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Some local travel required.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service (NOS), Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) is responsible for the collection, quality control, processing, dissemination, and archival of water level, tidal current, and related oceanographic and meteorological data. The water level data are obtained from more than 300 stations operating throughout the United States and its possessions. Most of these stations comprise a water level measuring network known as the National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON). Other stations are installed in support of hydrographic surveys and other special projects.

The NOS also has the responsibility for the determination and maintenance of all tidal datums within the marine boundaries of the United States. Tidal datums are a vertical reference based on specific phase of tide. These datums are used for navigation and shipping, marine boundary determination, and bathymetry products to name a few. The collected data and derived predictions are used to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally sound maritime commerce. These include data and products required by the National Weather Service to meet flood and tsunami warning responsibilities, the NWLON and a national network of Physical Oceanographic Real-Time Systems (PORTS®) in major U.S. harbors. CO-OPS intends to procure a contract to provide support in the quality control and processing of leveling and bench mark information data from these water level stations to help ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally sound maritime commerce.

Meteorologist

For over 25 years, AWS Truewind has been an international leader and innovator in renewable energy technology applications, advanced atmospheric modeling and measurement, as well as engineering services.

We currently seek a meteorologist to provide support for our growing domestic and international wind resource assessment activities. Specific duties will include monthly or quarterly validation and reporting of wind data collected by developers at prospective wind project sites, analysis of climatological data to assess the suitability of proposed sites for wind development, and, under the guidance of senior staff, eventually prepare wind resource assessment and energy production reports. In addition to these basic tasks, the position will offer opportunities to research and improve on the methodologies employed in wind resource assessment and to further our understanding of factors that affect project energy production.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate database management skills, have basic statistical knowledge, apply and enforce company quality-control standards, and be able to assist other meteorological staff in meeting deadlines. Prior knowledge of the wind industry and familiarity with wind energy project development are not required but desirable. Applicant should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, possess excellent organizational and communication skills, and must be able to meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks simultaneously.

This position will report to the Chief Meteorologist and require close coordination with other senior members of the meteorological staff.

Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's in Meteorology, a Master's degree in Meteorology or related field is highly desirable.

Experience: Minimal experience required, but a background/exposure to meteorological data analysis, FORTRAN and/or other computer programming languages, Microsoft Excel, and statistics/graphical software packages such as R, Matlab, GEMPAK, etc. is strongly desired.

The Department of Geography and Meteorology at Valparaiso University seeks applicants for the newly created position of Visiting Research Scientist. We are looking for a Ph.D. in meteorology/atmospheric science with technical expertise in radar data systems and professional interest in convective initiation, severe weather, winter weather, or aviation weather and the desire to excel in the midst of a large, dynamic undergraduate program. The position is non-tenure track. The position is currently funded for one year but is expected to continue for an additional two years through collaboration with MIT/Lincoln Laboratory and a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Department, located in NW Indiana near the south end of Lake Michigan in three-year old Kallay-Christopher Hall, is home to 140 undergraduate meteorology majors and owns a simultaneous dual-polarization 5-cm Doppler radar, radiosonde system and instrumented meteorological tower. The candidate will serve as the coordinator for radar-related observational and research efforts with MIT/Lincoln Laboratory, faculty members, staff, and undergraduate students. Responsibilities include development and testing of radar software and upgrades, coordination of intense observational periods, coordination of radar software systems within the department for classrooms and research, coordination of radar data sharing with the meteorology community, and the potential to develop an undergraduate research program.
