Applications Development Meteorologist

Applicants must possess a Masters or PhD in Meteorology from an accredited program and at least 3 years experience in working directly with meteorological data. The successful candidate will have significant experience and a strong grasp of the current state-of-the-science with applications of single and dual polarimetric Doppler radar data, mesoscale nowcasting/forecasting (prefer experience with MM5 and/or WRF), and mesoscale data assimilation techniques. Familiarity with research in atmospheric-science publications (e.g., American Meteorological Society journals) is a must. It is also required that the applicant be familiar with a wide range of environmental data sources and have a deep understanding of operational data quality checks.
In addition, the applicant should have some experience in applied research in order to incorporate technical ideas into developing new products for the company and upgrading/enhancing existing methodologies. For this purpose, a strong knowledge of compiling and running weather visualization software, such as GrADS, GEMPAK/N-AWIPS, Vis5D, and/or the National Weather Service’s AWIPS platform is highly preferred. Fundamental understanding of meteorological data formats (e.g., GRIB2, GEMPAK, netCDF, shapefiles, BIL files) is a plus as well.
A competent technical working knowledge of Linux and Windows system administration is required. Candidates must also have a strong ability to write, interpret and maintain Linux shell/Perl/PHP scripts. Competency with Fortran, C and/or C++ is a definite plus. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing is highly important. Though not essential, previous exposure to and experience supporting a 24x7 mission-critical operation would be valuable.
Primary duties will include research and development of new weather data products and improvement to existing data products; and a willingness and ability to provide support regarding data to technical support staff and other Baron operating units and clients.
