• Operations are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week - Personnel must be willing to work shift-work, to include weekends and holidays.

Hourly pay begins at $24.85 per hour for Observers. An additional amount is paid for health and welfare benefits. Night differential is compounded to base pay. Extra pay is included for holidays worked. Duties may include occasional overtime.

This is a relief position and will only be guaranteed one shift a month. However the chance to fill in for observers on leave is a possibility.

Opportunity to pick up additional shifts to cover leave of other observers is possible.

This site is subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

BASIC JOB FUNCTION:
General Meteorological Algorithm Development. Conduct research, collaborate, and apply numerical weather prediction techniques to smooth and accelerate the transition of new technologies in meteorology, specifically:

• Analyze data for use in weather forecast algorithm development
• Software development and visualization based upon algorithms developed and modified
• Verification of existing algorithms and software validation

The expected result is contribution to the transition of new weather techniques into AFWA and the weather community. Improved forecast accuracy of parameters is needed by war fighters to benefit combat forces with a more representative characterization of the battlefield environment.

DUTIES:

• Adapt algorithms to ½ degree GFS model. Modify existing algorithms to utilize ½ degree GFS model outputs.
• Evaluate modified algorithm performance relative to existing MM5 based algorithms.
• Adapt existing algorithms to the WRF model. Modify existing algorithms to utilize WRF model outputs. Evaluate modified algorithm performance relative to existing MM5 based algorithms.
• Validate performance of the Dust Transport Application (DTA). Perform validation studies on the DTA to determine forecast accuracy, limiting factors/conditions, and possible improvements.
• Validate performance of the Panofsky turbulence algorithm. Perform validation studies on the Panofsky turbulence algorithm to determine forecast accuracy, limiting factors/conditions, and possible improvements.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor of Science in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences required
• Enrollment in a Master.s degree program in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experience analyzing weather data for forecast use
• Understanding the mechanisms of conducting validation studies
• At least one year of programming experience required; prefer at least two
• Experience with scientific visualization and webpage software preferred

Duties:
The successful candidate will support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in the development, testing, routine application and maintenance of NCEP's WAVEWATCH III wind wave model. Specific activities will include

• General code maintenance and development in the context of operational wind wave modeling.
• Support of code management in community modeling efforts, in particularly in the context of the current NOPP project on developing the next generation physics approaches in operational wave modeling.
• The main focus will be on deep and intermediate water depth applications in the oceans (including shelf waters) and on the Great Lakes, and may include data assimilation and ensemble development. The position is expected to expand in the future into dealing with shallow water (surf-zone) physics, coastal and estuarine application, and coupled wave-surge and ocean-wave-weather modeling.

Requirements:

• Ph.D. in a field of physical or mathematical science relevant for wind wave modeling such as Civil Engineering.
• Experience and interest in operational wind wave modeling using WAVEWATCH III or a comparable model. Experience with data assimilation, ensemble modeling and model coupling desirable.
• Experience with running complex jobs, and processing large amounts of numerical output data on mainframe supercomputers and/or workstations in a FORTRAN/UNIX environment, using advanced statistical and display tools (Matlab desirable).
• Experience working in a team environment.

Major Duties
The successful candidate will be initially responsible for developing the knowledge-base sufficient to assume a significant role in managing day-to-day, routine, customized NWP, air quality, and hydrological operational model execution and product delivery in a 24/7 mission-critical environment. The operational modeling systems include a broad range of applications, from customized-science versions of MM5 and WRF for NWP, to advanced custom (MAQSIP-RT) and public (CMAQ) operational air quality models, to three different but sophisticated hydrological modeling systems (NWSRFS, TOPLATS-SMPV, LN-2). All of these applications include a wide-variety of space and time scales tailored to meet the specific and unique requirements of a very diverse customer base, including local and national broadcast television, state- and federal-agencies, consumer road-condition prediction, emergency management, and the aircraft and marine transportation sectors. After an initial training phase, the candidate will assume an increasingly independent role in day-to-day operational applications including input data QA/QC, model deployment for new applications, routine operational management and oversight, error-recovery, post-processing, product-delivery, and results-evaluation. The evaluation component of the position will allow for first-hand objective analysis of performance envisioned to feed directly back into further model improvements. The candidate will also be expected to implement modeling solutions developed by the senior modeling team within our rapid-prototyping and research-to-applications environment.

Qualifications
The basic requirement is an M.S. degree in Meteorology or Hydro-meteorology with 3+ years experience in operational environmental modeling.

POSITION: Weather Education Coordinator Summer Internship (Sponsored by Kiwanis Foundation of Houston)

Weather Research Center [WRC], a Houston based 501(c)(3) non-profit educational and research corporation, was founded in 1987 to respond to a need to educate the public about weather and weather safety. The mission of WRC is to advance the science of weather and the knowledge of the weather's impact on the global community through research, prediction, and education in order to inspire America's next generation of scientists and engineers.

The Center's activities are focused on: 1) education of newly graduated meteorologists in the art of global marine and tropical weather forecasting, 2) outreach/community education programs for school children and adults and 3) weather research. The John C. Freeman Weather Museum, the first museum of its kind in the nation, is a project of WRC and opened at the Center in the Houston Museum District in April of 2006. The goal of the museum is to make the community weatherwise. In order to achieve this goal, the museum offers weather camps, weather labs, scout merit badge classes, weather talks and teacher workshops throughout the year.

Position Description:

The applicant must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full-time student in the fall of 2010, preferably pursuing a degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science. The intern will coordinate and promote the educational outreach programs of the Weather Museum.

The intern will also have the opportunity to work in the WRC forecast and operations center (getting experience in the field of marine and tropical meteorology) as well as in the Weather Museum. WRC provides weather and forecasting services to clients worldwide, severe weather warning services, hurricane predictions, environmental studies, and weather forensics. WRC services are both United States and internationally oriented. The museum is open Monday through Saturday to the public and sees about 6,000-7,000 visitors each year. The intern will be able to interact with the public each day.

Responsibilities for Educational Outreach Programs:

Weather is a part of our everyday lives, and it is something that everyone needs to know about. One of the main activities that Weather Research Center and the Weather Museum focus on is educating the public about weather and weather safety through our outreach programs. Weather Camp is offered to children ages 5-17 during the summer, winter break and spring break. Weather Merit Badge classes for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are offered monthly on site as well as Teacher Workshops. We would like to increase the amount of classes given and the amount of participants in the classes. Other ways that we serve the community are through our Weather Labs where we go to communities and schools to teach the basics of weather and guided tours of the museum with a meteorologist.

Weather observation is primary responsibility. Intensive weather reporting occurs on days when there are flights. Observation, recording, and reporting of surface weather conditions begins six hours before aircraft depart McMurdo station. Hourly observations are reported to MacWeather forecaster. May require irregular sleep patterns if plane is scheduled to depart early morning or late at night. On non-flight days, weather is reported three times a day. Observes, records and reports wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions and phenomena following Federal Meteorological Handbook standards. Sets up and maintains portable weather station and ceilometer. Operates and maintains backup sensors.

When in McMurdo, primary duties are to receive trainings and prepare cargo for camp. Weather delays may be experienced. When all camp specific tasks are complete, other departments may have tasking, which may be considered menial labor (dish washing, checking equipment, conducting inventories, shoveling, etc).

When not reporting weather, works as support labor for general camp and science support activities. Required to work outside on various jobs in extreme cold weather conditions. Duties may include the following:

Cargo Responsibilities:

• Loading/unloading aircraft. Communicates with load masters and aircraft personnel.
• Prepares cargo for movement. May include packaging, labeling, weighing, and palletizing cargo. Communicates weights and sizes of cargo with Fixed Wing Supervisor.
• Assists with waste retrograde and hazardous cargo identification - labeling and handling prior to shipping back to McMurdo Station via fixed wing aircraft. May separate and dispose of materials. Tracks and manifests hazardous waste. Responsible for packaging and documenting hazardous cargo.
• Prepare and stage equipment and maintains storage berms.

Fuels Responsibilities (where no dedicated fuels position exists):

• Performs fuel tests on aviation fuel.
• Performs fuel transfers, via pipe, hose and tanks. May refuel aircraft, buildings, and vehicles with hand or electric pump.
• Performs preventive maintenance tasks as directed.
• Tracks and reports quantities of fuel delivered to field and amounts given to aircraft.

Mechanical Responsibilities:

• Assists with tracking maintenance and repair needs of all equipment in camp
• Assists with operating small mechanical equipment, including chainsaws, drills, welderators, etc. as appropriate
• Provides mechanical assistance in the repair of vehicles and other equipment.
• Operates light equipment vehicles, such as snow mobiles, and tracked vehicles. May groom around camp and runway.
• Assist in the installation and maintenance of the skiway as needed.

Science Support/Customer Service:

• Assists grantees with support requests and needs, as appropriate

Other Duties:

• Performs functions with manual equipment such as shovels, picks, and similar implements.
• Assist with cooking, track food use, plan re-supply, and assist with all galley tasks and dish washing, as needed.

Required Experience: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Valid Driver’s License is required. One year of experience in weather observation is required. An additional three years of combined experience in any of the following: weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, mechanical equipment proficiency, logistic support, or other related experience is required. Demonstrated ability to observe, record and report wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions is required. Demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments is required. Computer competency is required. Federal Meteorological Handbook experience is preferred.

The data records to be used are likely to be highly variable both in terms of sampling and quality, and the challenge is to identify and discern the useful signal in them, and quantify the temporal variability of aerosol.
• Inseparable from this is the task of providing a detailed critical assessment of various aerosol products. This assessment must go beyond the usual simple comparison.

Qualifications:

• Candidates should have a strong background in statistical analysis of large volume of data, and in signal processing.

Atmospheric Sciences Department

Lyndon State College, located in Vermont’s beautiful Northeast Kingdom, enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduates and employs 59 full-time faculty. Our mission is to prepare every student for personal and professional success through experience-based, high-quality programs in the liberal arts and professional studies. The successful candidate for the position below will demonstrate college teaching effectiveness, promise of scholarly activity, and ability to work harmoniously with colleagues, within and across departments, and will contribute to program development and assessment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching undergraduate atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, and related elective courses and engaging students in research activities.  The ability to teach in one or more of the following areas is desirable: climate-dynamics, numerical weather prediction, tropical meteorology, physical oceanography, or hydro-meteorology.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or related area, experience with major meteorological software packages and relevant computer languages, and teaching using technology. Commitment to college teaching excellence, scholarship and professional development, and community and collegial service are required.
