Department Overview
The Meteorology Services Unit in Applied Technology Services (ATS) provides a range of weather forecasting and meteorology applications, in-field measurement capabilities of meteorology, and data base management services to PG&E clients and third parties. Facilities include an operational weather forecast office with satellite data downlinks, local network, and dedicated server, instruments laboratory, measurement and calibration equipment and field vehicle. The unit is made up of 6 degreed meteorologists, 1 senior engineering technician and 1 senior technical assistant. Since these observations are made with a variety of equipment and experience and they travel through complex communication networks, it is necessary to develop automated techniques to quality control and validate the observations before they are used. The candidate will be expected to work with internal and external users and data providers to develop automated quality assurance techniques.

Required Education: The position requires a bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of related experience in Meteorology, Physical Science or Computer Science.

Required Skills: The candidate is expected to be proficient in UNIX, Fortran and capable of working in a parallel computing environment. The candidate must also have experience in dealing with observational data from both satellite and non-satellite platforms (e.g., knowing providers, knowing content, plotting data, etc.) and understanding the nomenclature used to define the many different observation types (including acronyms)

Desired Skills: The observations are handled internally in BUFR format, so familiarity with this data format is desirable. It is desired that the candidate be details-oriented and have good communication skills. Experience with documentation of computer modules with the context of a large system is a plus.

The primary function of the position will develop a research program focused on climatological processes or impacts of climate variations and change, particularly in the US Midwest and the nation.

Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop a competitive, productive research program on climatological processes, regional meteorological/climatological responses and/or societally-important impacts of climate change and variability. Climate research will be expected to be relevant to Illinois, the US Midwest and the nation. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in developing a research program, increasing the visibility and relevance of ISWS climate-related research through publication of scientific reports and external peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, and interactions with the scientific and public communities through presentations and press releases. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain external funding in order to increase the capabilities and expertise within the Center for Atmospheric Sciences. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the Center, the Illinois State Water Survey, the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability, and the University of Illinois.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or related field with emphasis on climate sciences. Successful record of publications in refereed scientific journals and securing external funding for research activities. Ability to work productively with peers within the scientific community, particularly in collaborative and multidisciplinary research, as well as managing the research activities of support staff and students. Demonstrated ability to initiate projects on emerging scientific issues. Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications: A strong statistical background, particularly as applied to climate or impacts data (observations and model-generated), scale interactions, or impacts, is highly preferred.

Appointment Status:

Salary: $75,000 to $90,000

Raytheon Polar Services - Experience Antarctica

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for maintaining the camp meteorological equipment and systems in an operational and calibrated status. Conducts meteorological observations and reports them to Weather office, aircraft, and others as required. Also performs general labor duties as required.

Weather observation is primary responsibility. Intensive weather reporting occurs on days when there are flights. Observation, recording, and reporting of surface weather conditions begins six hours before aircraft depart McMurdo station. Hourly observations are reported to MacWeather forecaster. May require irregular sleep patterns if plane is scheduled to depart early morning or late at night. On non-flight days, weather is reported three times a day. Observes, records and reports wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions and phenomena following Federal Meteorological Handbook standards. Sets up and maintains portable weather station and ceilometer. Operates and maintains backup sensors.

When not reporting weather, works as support labor for general camp and science support activities. Required to work outside on various jobs in extreme cold weather conditions. Duties may include the following:

Required Experience: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Valid Driver's License is required. One year of experience in weather observation is required. Demonstrated ability to observe, record and report wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions is required. Demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments is required. Computer competency is required. Federal Meteorological Handbook experience is preferred.

Special Conditions: Must successfully complete the 5 day Observer training class prior to deployment to Antarctica.

Weather Research Center [WRC], a Houston based non-profit educational and research corporation, was founded in 1987 to respond to a need to educate the public about weather and weather safety. The mission of WRC is to advance the science of weather and the knowledge of the weather's impact on the global community through research, prediction, and education in order to inspire America's next generation of scientists and engineers.

The Center's activities are focused on: 1) education of newly graduated meteorologists in the art of global marine and tropical weather forecasting, 2) outreach/community education programs for school children and adults and 3) weather research. The John C. Freeman Weather Museum, the first museum of its kind in the nation, is a project of WRC and opened at the Center in the Houston Museum District in April of 2006. The goal of the museum is to make the community weatherwise. In order to achieve this goal, the museum offers weather camps, weather labs, scout merit badge classes, weather talks and teacher workshops throughout the year.

Each summer, Weather Camp™ is an exciting opportunity for people of all ages to learn about weather from actual meteorologists! Weather Camp sessions are divided into age groups. One camp session is offered for children ages 5-7, five sessions are offered for children ages 7-11, five sessions are offered for children ages 12-17 and one session is offered for adults. Camps begin on June 12, 2009 and run through August 7, 2009. Topics include weather basics, forecasting, tornado formation, hurricane formation and tracking, climate, weather history, career opportunities, and much more! WRC Weather Camp™ was started in 1993 by Weather Research Center President, Jill F. Hasling, CCM. It was designed to be a way for children to learn more about weather and weather safety. Meteorologists at WRC have developed an exciting curriculum using computers, activities, games, demonstrations and experiments to fill the day.

The intern will also have the opportunity to spend time in the museum operating the exhibits, interacting with visitors and giving tours. The intern will be able to use the museum as an educational resource during camp sessions. In addition to teaching Weather Camp™ and working in the museum, the student intern will have the opportunity to work in the WRC forecast and operations center. Position Description:
The applicant must be currently enrolled, full-time, undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full-time student in the fall of 2009, preferably pursuing a degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science or Engineering. The intern will have two main tasks: 1) collaborate with the Museum Curator to research, design, create and promote a new Gulf Coast Weather Pioneers exhibition and project granted through the Houston Arts Alliance; and 2) coordinate and promote the educational outreach programs of the Weather Museum.

The intern will also have the opportunity to work in the WRC forecast and operations center (getting experience in the field of marine and tropical meteorology) as well as in the Weather Museum. WRC provides weather and forecasting services to clients worldwide, severe weather warning services, hurricane predictions, environmental studies, and weather forensics. WRC services are both United States and internationally oriented. The museum is open Monday through Saturday to the public and sees about 6,000-7,000 visitors each year. The intern will be able to interact with the public each day.

Responsibilities for Gulf Coast Weather Pioneers Project:
The project entitled "Gulf Coast Weather Pioneers" will be created to inform the public of the weather history of a large area from southeast Texas to southwest Louisiana. To do so we will partner with Harris County libraries and museums to incorporate their own collections of early weather observer records to help build the exhibit. With this newfound information we will create a new exhibit that will include old weather equipment, a Weather Pioneer Website, a Weather Pioneer Video Exhibit, and finally monthly video showings of the 1953 Waco Tornado and the infamous Hurricane Carla from 1961. The exhibit will open with a series of guest lecturers that will include weather historians, National Weather Service and National Weather Association employees, Texas A&M professors and people employed at the National Hurricane Center.

Responsibilities for Educational Outreach Programs:
Weather is a part of our everyday lives, and it is something that everyone needs to know about. One of the main activities that Weather Research Center and the Weather Museum focus on is educating the public about weather and weather safety through our outreach programs. Weather Merit Badge classes for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are offered monthly on site as well as Teacher Workshops. We would like to increase the amount of classes given and the amount of participants in the classes. Other ways that we serve the community are through our Weather Labs where we go to communities and schools to teach the basics of weather and guided tours of the museum with a meteorologist.

PROJECT SCIENTIST, IPCC WORKING GROUP II TECHNICAL SUPPORT UNIT

Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assesses the vulnerability of socio-economic and natural systems to climate change, potential negative and positive consequences, and options for adapting to it. A Technical Support Unit (TSU) provides technical and administrative services in support of assessment deliverables. The TSU is located at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California, USA.

As a core member of the TSU, a Project Scientist is sought to provide scientific expertise to both the IPCC WG2 co-chairs and to the Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for Impact and Climate Analysis (TGICA). Emphasis will be on scoping, preparing, and reviewing the WG2 contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and any Special Reports agreed upon by the Panel in response to specific requests of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The incumbent will serve as TSU focal point for support of the TGICA work program, including the New Scenarios development process, ongoing data archiving and distribution mechanisms, and training and capacity building.

Requires a Ph.D. in social or natural science discipline and 3 or more years' experience relevant to the development and use of scenarios in assessment of impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability to global climate change. The specific academic discipline of the successful applicant may be less important than practical training and experience in interdisciplinary climate change research.

This is a term position through 30 September 2009, with possibility of annual extensions through FY2014. Relocation expenses will be covered.
