The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University (TTU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Atmospheric Science to begin in Fall 2010. The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level; a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science is required at the time of appointment.
The successful candidate will possess research interests in the areas of cloud and precipitation microphysics, and will establish an innovative, externally funded academic research program. Expertise in lightning electrodynamics is also preferred, but not required. The candidate will be expected to develop graduate courses in their specialty, direct M.S. and Ph.D. student research and assist with undergraduate courses in Atmospheric Science. The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track position with expertise in boundary layer meteorology and its applications in wind power. The Department intends to fill the position at the Assistant Professor level by fall 2010.
The position requires (1) an earned doctorate with a major in atmospheric science (meteorology) or a closely related discipline, (2) a commitment to excellence in teaching, research and professional service, and (3) evidence of scholarly achievements. For this purpose, a strong knowledge of compiling and running weather visualization software, such as GrADS, GEMPAK/N-AWIPS, Vis5D, and/or the National Weather Service’s AWIPS platform is highly preferred. Fundamental understanding of meteorological data formats (e.g., GRIB2, GEMPAK, netCDF, shapefiles, BIL files) is a plus as well.
A competent technical working knowledge of Linux and Windows system administration is required. Candidates must also have a strong ability to write, interpret and maintain Linux shell/Perl/PHP scripts. Competency with Fortran, C and/or C++ is a definite plus. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing is highly important. Though not essential, previous exposure to and experience supporting a 24x7 mission-critical operation would be valuable.
Primary duties will include research and development of new weather data products and improvement to existing data products; and a willingness and ability to provide support regarding data to technical support staff and other Baron operating units and clients.
