Aviation Meteorology Committee Activities
Charter
The Aviation Meteorology Committee of the National Weather Association strives to address current issues of importance to the aviation weather community. A primary goal of this committee is to improve weather education for pilots and other operational personnel who have a strong need for weather information. Emphasis is placed on serving the community through project leadership roles, advising the general NWA membership and leadership on applicable issues, and serving as a catalyst supporting efforts to improve/advance all aspects of aviation weather research and education. The committee continuously seeks support from the entire aviation weather community to include interested personnel (forecasters, observers, pilots, briefers, researchers, etc.) from the NWS, FAA, AOPA, DoD, private airlines, private aviation weather related companies, and researchers.
The NWA presents an annual Aviation Weather Award to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals or groups that have significantly contributed to improving aviation weather support. The Aviation Meteorology Committee encourages you to submit nominations for this award to the Awards Committee.
2011 Committee Plan
The Aviation Meteorology Committee establishes goals in order to support the committee's mission and the NWA's Vision and Strategic Plan.
Goals
- Conduct a General Aviation Weather Seminar to coincide with the October Annual Meeting in Birmingham, AL (scheduled for Saturday, October 15, 2011, from 10 am – 2 pm, at the Southern Museum of Flight).
- Obtain FAA Safety Team (FAAST) WINGS certification for each of the Weather Theory for Pilots courses.
- Develop the fourth Weather Theory for Pilots module, "Aviation Weather Forecasts". This block will contain information about significant changes in aviation weather products that have occurred over the last several years (e.g., 30 hour TAFS, elimination of TWEB route forecasts, Graphical AIRMET product, etc) and contain the following sections:
- Introduction
- Weather Advisories
- The Area Forecast
- Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts
- Revise aspects of the current Weather Theory for Pilots block and create four separate web pages for each module to be accessible through the FAASafety.gov site (for WINGS accreditation).
Supporting the NWA Vision and Strategic Plan
- Recruit military and private aviation meteorologists into the NWA and encourage members from these communities to join the committee.
- Increase education outreach efforts at regional and national "fly-ins." Provide a resource database for NWA members, and others, developing outreach and education presentations.
- Continue to provide the FAA with suggestions for improving the weather-related written and flight test questions on their various exams.
- Continue to improve the visibility of the NWA within the aviation community, and raise awareness of the Aviation Meteorology Committee as a resource for expertise on a variety of subjects.
- Encourage the submission of at least one aviation weather related article to the NWA Digest or Electronic Journal.
- Improve communication of Aviation Weather information to NWA members through the use of the newsletter.
- Continue to strengthen committee membership by recruiting dynamic new members from diverse organizations representing the aviation, academic, operational, and research communities.
