June 4th,
2011
We’ve had two meetings already this year,
though we can’t really call the first one a “meeting”. On May 14th, a few
members got together in Elmore County and helped to disperse water and
snacks to those affected by the tornadoes of April 27th. This past Thursday was more of a
traditional meeting, where we had a great turn out at the NWS office to
hear Tim Coleman present some of his research on the big tornado
outbreak. Special thanks to Tim
for taking the time to come down to the office.
There is still a small window if you want to
submit an abstract for the NWA Conference in October. If you are holding out, please
submit these ASAP to Kevin Laws.

A new year is upon us and with a
new year comes new faces. We
would like you to join us in congratulating Tara Golden on her successful
campaign to becoming the new Vice President of the Central Alabama NWA Chapter. Along with Tara’s election,
Kevin and Scott will return as President and Secretary, once again. 2011 will be a big year for us as we
are not only working on some new places for our chapter to visit this year,
but also, we have the 36th Annual NWA Meeting right here in
Birmingham. We will be calling
on you in the near future for your help as the event draws near. So, check back to our website every
once in awhile for the latest on the Annual Meeting, as well as the next
location of our upcoming meeting.

The time is upon us to get that
voting feeling. Kevin will be
sending out information very soon regarding chapter officer nominations for
2011. Start thinking about who you
would like to run the show next year…and if that person is
you…go right ahead and nominate yourself. Remember, next year we will be
having the National Weather Association Annual Conference right here in
Birmingham, so if that’s something that you would be interested in
getting involved in, this is the best way to do it!

The second meeting of the year
was held at the NWS BMX office.
Walt Peterson came in and talked to us about Dual Pol Radar,
shedding some light on a couple of things we weren’t privy to. His talk was recorded and if
you’re interested in watching it, let Kevin know and we’ll try
to figure out some way to get it to you. Hopefully we’ll have some
information on the next meeting soon, so check back in the next couple of
weeks.

Our first meeting of 2010 was a
complete success…though we would have liked to have seen many more
folks!! Either way, we had
pizza and soda, took a tour of the FOX6 studios, hosted by J-P Dice and
some even got to be on the “Green Screen”. Hopefully everyone enjoyed
themselves! Check back in the
next couple of week for the latest on the next meeting.

The
Central Alabama Chapter of the NWA is fortunate to have these individuals
leading the way for 2010. Excitement is building for the 2011 NWA
Convention in Birmingham and the local NWA chapter will play in significant
role in making it a success.
